Tips for Moving into Your First Student Apartment

Student-Apartment

The day you move into your first student apartment is a very exciting day. Here are some tips to get you started on the right foot.

Buy The Essentials

Start with essentials. These are the things you will need no matter what space you move into. For the kitchen, you’ll need supplies like utensils, cutting boards, prep bowls, pots and pans. For the bathroom, you’ll need the basics like towels, shampoo, bath mats and hand soap. Don’t forget to stock up on cleaning supplies as well – you’ll need dish soap, all-purpose cleaners, rubber gloves and more!

Donate or Junk What You Don’t Want/Need

When it comes time to pack, you might realize there are a lot of things you’ve collected over the years that you don’t need or want anymore. To keep your suitcase light and your space clutter-free, donate or junk anything that no longer serves you. This could be things like books you won’t re-read, clothes that no longer fit or that you won’t wear, extra dishes or mugs you don’t use, loose papers you no longer need, old furniture and toiletries like half-used lotions and bath supplies you’ll never use.

Buy Easy To Remove Decor

When you move in you’re going to find things you’ll want to improve, especially decor. Be sure to do your research and look for renter-friendly materials. Some things you can look for are command hooks instead of nails for hanging pictures, curtain rods and more. Instead of a coat of paint, you can add colour to your space with easy to swap out textiles like throws or cushions.

Make It Feel Like Home

Bring anything you think is appropriate for it to feel cozy. You’ll be spending a lot of time here so make the space your own. It’ll make it easier to relax and transition into a new place.

Get Renters Insurance

There’s a very real possibility that you or a guest could accidentally damage property and maybe even other tenants’ possessions. Renter’s insurance covers you for this and it’s very cheap. They can be a measly $7 – $15 a month which is a very fair price to pay than if you had to pay thousands of dollars for serious damages out of your own pocket.

Celebrate Your New Apartment

Once you’re all settled in to your new apartment, enjoy the excitement that off-campus student living has to offer! Make the most of living close to your university or college, take the opportunity to meet new people, explore the area, and make new friends!
